Dr. Philipp Baumbach received the award of the Faculty of Social and Behavioral Sciences for the best Ph.D. thesis of the faculty in 2021 on the occasion of Schiller Day on June 24, 2022. The award for the thesis entitled "Prevalence and characteristics of chronic pain after intensive care treatment considering health-related quality of life" was realized within the BMBF-funded Center for Sepsis and Infection Research (CSCC), where the project of Prof. Winfried Meißner, Head of the Pain Therapy Section at Jena University Hospital, in cooperation with the Chair of Clinical Psychology (Prof. Ilona Croy) under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Weiß. The award-winning Ph.D. thesis investigated long-term consequences of survival of intensive therapy treatment with special regard to sepsis. Dr. Baumbach found considerable negative effects of intensive care treatment on different areas of life, the quality of life in general and also a sensitization of the nociceptive system, which can lead to a possible chronification of pain. The work offers not only essential statements on future resource planning, but also options on how to reduce the aforementioned negative consequences of intensive therapy treatment. The results are published in high-impact journals and received considerable international attention.
