In this project funded by the European Innovation Center's Pathfinder Open program, we are investigating the composition and perception of body odors. Body odors play a subtle but crucial role in many social situations. They influence our attraction to our partner, create a sense of belonging in the family, and allow us to draw conclusions about the feelings or illnesses of our fellow human beings. This is because body odor is influenced by genetic connections, hormonal changes, current inflammatory processes and diet, among other factors. Since the apocrine sweat glands are sensitive to adrenaline, physiological and emotional arousal also alter body odor. We aim to develop a matrix that captures how people describe body odor from different "settings" (during exercise, colds, different diets, etc.). Thus, our research contributes to the overall goal of the project to digitize the sense of smell and make it usable for health applications, e.g. for patients with an olfactory disorder.
